Copy editing & proofing
Good copy isn't just copy without errors. It's copy that's been looked at properly, by someone who knows the difference between a sentence that's technically correct and one that actually does its job.
At Edited By, we bring an editorial eye to every piece we touch. We're not just checking for typos. We're reading for clarity, rhythm, consistency and the moments where the writing almost works but doesn't quite get there.
What we do
Structural editing
Sometimes the issue isn't the words, it's the architecture. We look at how a piece is built, whether the argument holds, whether the sections are in the right order and whether the piece earns its ending.
Line editing
Sentence by sentence, we sharpen clarity, improve flow and remove anything that's working against the reader. Your voice stays intact while everything that's blurring it gets cut.
Proofreading
Spelling, punctuation, grammar, formatting and consistency, caught before the piece goes anywhere.
Tone & style refinement
Sometimes copy is technically correct but the register is off. Too formal, too casual, inconsistent across sections or simply not landing the way it should.
FAQs
What's the difference between proofreading and editing?
1
Proofreading is the final check for errors: spelling, punctuation, grammar and formatting. Editing goes deeper, looking at structure, clarity, flow, tone and whether the piece is doing what it's supposed to do. Most copy benefits from both, in that order.
2
Do you edit copy in any industry?
Yes. The editorial principles that make writing work are consistent across categories. We've edited copy across beauty, travel, hospitality, corporate, not-for-profit and consumer brands. The subject matter changes, the standards don't.
Can you edit copy without changing my voice?
3
That's the goal. A good edit makes writing sound more like the writer, not less. We're not imposing our voice, we're removing what's obscuring yours.
4
How much does the brief need to include?
At minimum, we need to understand who the audience is, what the piece is trying to achieve and any tone of voice guidelines you're working to. The more context we have, the more useful the edit.
5
Do you offer tracked changes so I can see what's been amended?
Yes. We deliver all edits in tracked changes by default so you can review, accept or query anything before finalising.
